So... I think posting from the subway is going to be a theme. Afterall, I spend nearly 2 hours of my day being what many call a "strap-hanger". The term goes back to a time when leather, then metal staps hung for the ceiling of subway cars for those passangers unable to get a seat.
At the moment we sit at 28th Street because there's smoke up the line at Lexington. There are announcments that trains behind us have already been routed around but we are caught in the middle, spending time in each station from Union Square to here. All we're told is that when FDNY clears the tracks we'll be able to proceed.
There's no easy why to get underway from here. I need to get to another line. (we just left after 20 minutes for 34th).
There were mixed messages about F/V service to Queens, at first they said to us it, then they start talking about the 7. So... to be safe I hopped a B train at 34th and transfered to a 7 (which I just missed and now await) at 42nd St.
In a future post I'll surely talk about IRT, BMT & IND. The only point about them I'll mention today is that IRT train are a foot more narrow then others (numbered lines are IRT and letters BMT or IND).
Now a foot doesn't sound like much, but even before I knew about it, the numbered trains felt different, they feel croweded even with open seats.
Anyway, the 7 is elevated on the Queens side giving us something to look at and cell coverage too!.
Not being familar with the 7 I got off at the wrong transfer and I'm freezing my ass off waiting for another local 7 so I can get a local R or V train here at Roosevelt Avenue.
I had to stop typing as my hands were freezing outside on the elevated platform. I'll be on another local soon, it's a hike at the transfer point.
I hope some outside NYC like my tales. Till next time...

I had to work late tonight and one of the bummers is that 'late night' the R train doesn't run to Queens.
While some may argue that riding a local for 20 stops isn't optimal it does stop right at the store and by home. So... I rushed at quarter of 12 to try for one of the last trains. But when the second N train showed (only stops there 'late night') it was a good bet that I should ride it to the F then take the E on the Queens end.
Normally after 12 I catch the 6 at a different station and get the E on the city side, saving 1 transfer.
Oddly the 3 train but fewer stop trip was shotter even with the inevitable post-midnight delay for poltergeist or whatever.
Need to try this route on purpose this weekend.
When moving to New York one notices that anything to do with security is just a little tougher here. This clip shows our smart-card driven laundry room. No coins to steal. Where there might have been a change machine there a card dispenser/charger. $5 gets a new $3 card or $5 to $20 recharges a card (no surcharge).
So much tech to replace some coins!
Good Morning.
My new Palm Centro (nickname: Pinky) came with mobile Vox and a mobile blog client just sounds cool. So, here it is, early in the morning after working the closing shift at my store, drinking Arizona Ice Tea and watching "Poker After Dark" on my DVR.
Mobile photos, video and text of my life in New York sounds fun, I look forward to sharing with everyone. I've only lived here for about 6 months.
So, that's the first tidbit, where have I lived?
Born in Philadelphia where I lived for my first nearly 8 years, then Los Angeles for 8 years, a year between Vermont and Albany, New York, back to L.A. and then in 1991 I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I lived until 2006, then a drive-by in Tulsa, OK followed by 9 months in Las Vegas.
As you can see the last few years have been crazy when it came to residence but I think I'm in New York to stay.
More stories about my new adopted Home to follow...
